Occluded Front

Stationary Front

A boundary where opposing forces of a cold and warm front result in little or no movement is a stationary front. This happens when the colder and warmer air masses push against each other from opposite directions and neither mass has enough momentum to override the other, so the front stalls and remains in roughly the same place. Weather along a stationary front can be persistent but light, with clouds and extended periods of precipitation in the zone, and winds that are often variable or light.

This differs from fronts that move: a cold front approaches and invades from ahead, bringing sharper lifting of warm air and typically a more abrupt change in weather, while a warm front pushes outward more gradually as warm air slides over cooler air. An occluded front forms when a faster-moving cold front catches up to a warm front, lifting the warm air completely off the surface, which is a different dynamic altogether.
